Boating Vacation
Words and Music by Sue Riley ©2003

This years’ been rough, we need a break, my was-band said to me
Let’s join our friends and take a little voyage on the sea.
We’ll pull into a slip at night and stay a couple days.
We’ll walk the beach, and drink some wine, and take some time to play.

The boat we had was full of toys designed to make things nice.
A VCR, a stereo, a freezer, making ice.
Navigation gadgets to get us from A to B
The sunsets look so lovely, on an air-conditioned sea.

We’re pulling out. We’re heading out to sea.
Ten fun days, with full amenities I’ll write some songs, and play guitar.
Bill will do some fishing. We’re going on a boating vacation.

We couldn’t read the radar, and completely missed the pass.
But once we finally got there, it was paradise, at last!
While we slept some pirates lifted all our fishing gear
We left the port, amazed to find that crime could happen here.

We filled the vessel up with fuel, a horrifying sum.
Heading for Captiva, and a famous yachting club
Now, this is really living, a peaceful island feel.
We’ll buy some fish for dinner, who needs a rod and reel?

We’re pulling out. We’re heading out to sea.
Ten fun days, with full amenities, I’ll write some songs, and play guitar.
Bill won’t be going fishing; these problems are just minor aggravations.

We were sitting on the sofa when a loud crash filled the air.
A golf ball through the window. Now, how did that get there?
But, hey, we have insurance, and Willie’s got a broom.
We have to leave at high tide, or we’re bound to get marooned.

We’re giving up, we’re heading home, more fumes go into space.
Where’s that water coming from that’s spraying in my face?
Ten miles off the coast, oh no, an engine starts to fail.
Forget the engine, something’s burst! It’s time to start to bail.

I’m trying to guess how far to shore, then remember, I can’t swim.
Water sprays the engines; it can’t be good for them.
The broom now plugs the broken hose, at least the flood is done.
My Dramamines not working, who said this would be fun!

We’re pulling out, we’re heading out to sea.
Ten, fun days, with full amenities
Too sick to write, forget guitar, the fish are safe tonight.
I hope I get back home with my life.

I’ll need a real vacation to recover from this scene.
This wasn’t like the pictures in those yachting magazines.
We finally docked, I crawled to shore and gave the earth a hug.
The next time I go boating, I’ll be floating in my tub.

We’re pulling out. We’re heading out to sea.
For ten, fun days, with full amenities
I’ll write some songs and play guitar.
Bill will do some fishing.
We’re going on a boating vacation, OH NO
Going on a boating vacation.
Instant Divorce! Just add water!
